JAMA EDITOR FIRED FOR POLITICIZING JOURNAL

George D. Lundberg, who has been the editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) for the last 17 years, was fired on Friday, January 15, because of an article that appeared in the latest issue of JAMA. The article, based on an eight-year-old study by the Kinsey Institute, came to the conclusion that impeached President Bill Clinton thinks like an adolescent when it comes to defining sex. At a press conference held at the Chicago headquarters of the American Medical Association (AMA), Lundberg's boss, AMA Vice President E. Ratcliff Anderson, stated "Dr. Lundberg...has threatened the historic tradition and integrity of the [journal] by inappropriately and inexcusably interjecting JAMA into a major political debate that has nothing to do with science or medicine."

Apparently, Dr. Lundberg had been under observation for several months, and Anderson stated that numerous incidents caused him to lose confidence in the JAMA editor. NRA has long held that JAMA has been politicizing the issue of "gun control" in its pages, a topic that is clearly best left to criminologists to study, not physicians. Scientifically flawed studies, geared toward the conclusion that restricting access to firearms by law-abiding citizens will somehow affect violent crime, have appeared in JAMA on countless occasions. Even editorials by well-known gun-ban proponents like Sarah and James Brady, who have no background in medicine or scientific analysis, have been presented to promote further erosions of our right to keep and bear arms. NRA can only hope that the firing of Dr. Lundberg will lead to a change in the journal's apparent policy of promoting gun control with junk science, but we are not holding our breath.
