Weakened federally in 1994, gun-prohibitionists have zeroed-in on California like a laser, launching assaults on the freedoms of law-abiding Californians at all levels of California government, including city councils. NRA has been largely successful in defeating their blitzkrieg of gun control, but faces serious challenges in 1999.

California gun-prohibitionists have made important gains in the last few elections; in 1998, Democrats strengthened their hold on the two legislative houses and gained the governorship with the election of Grey Davis over Republican Dan Lungren. What does this mean for the California gun-owner? And as California is watched closely by the rest of the nation, what does it mean for America's gun-owning community as a whole?

In a 12-minute interview in mid-December, California NRA Chief Lobbyist Steve Helsley discussed these issues with NRA-Live's Ginny Simone. Please visit NRA-Live for the complete video interview.

STEVE HELSLEY INTERVIEW TALKING POINTS / QUOTES

  • "...There's going to be a tremendous push to take away our freedoms, no doubt about it..."

  • The dynamics of passing anti-gun legislation has changed dramatically with a Democrat in the governor seat. Democrats can no longer craft unmanagable legislation with the goal of drawing a governor's veto. "...There's no one else to blame,,, They must be responsible for the product..."

  • "Assault Firearm" is a political term, there is no real class of firearm that holds this label. The legislature in California has grappled with this fact for more than 10 years. "...If you are going to ban something, or restrict something, you have to be able to define what it is you're talking about..."

  • "...I'm not sure the Attorney General-Elect wants this problem. His predecessors have been hurt politically by it, now he's in line to get hurt himself..." (Webmaster note: Click here for a related article)

  • "...In the past 5 or 6 years... we have been very successful [in California] because our members got involved and hammered away at their elected officials. We have defeated virtually all of the gun control bills and we've passed pro-gun bills... We've held our own and we've gained ground..."

  • "...If our members will get out there and get involved with their elected officials, and get them the facts, we will prevail..."

  • "...I think we'll have a junk-gun bill, a trigger-lock bill, we'll have a one-gun-a-month bill, we'll have the wish list from Handgun Control..."

  • "...I'm really enthused by the challenge. If you believe the LA Times, we have our backs against the wall, things have never been so dark for us. If the grassroots folks get out there and do their job, I think we may take some small hits, but will do a very good job of protecting our freedoms..."

  • [Regarding lower crime rates] "...I think what we're starting to see is the effect of 3-Strikes-You're-Out and a bill out there called 10-20-Life, which is serious gun control... gun control for criminals. If you use a gun to rob someone, or hurt someone, or threaten someone, you're going to prison for a very, very long time.... This is the worst nightmare for gun control zealots because gun control doesn't work, but the kind of gun control, if you will, for criminals that we have traditionally supported works great..."

  • "...In Fresno they have had a program for some time now, making very clear to criminals through ads and TV spots, what the results of using a gun in a crime are, and the crimes in Fresno have dropped just a staggering amount..."

  • "...The kind of gun control that works is putting criminals in jail. Of course, that's what we've been saying for a long time..."

  • "...There's no doubt [the Democrats] can pass a bill. They can pass whatever bill they want to. But what they don't want to do is have it blow up in their face, and if they're not careful, it will..."
