CAMPAIGN FINANCE "REFORM" ALIVE AGAIN
|
|
The House will begin debate next week
on
campaign finance "reform," and once again, the legislation being used to
promote
the "reform" of our campaign finance laws is the ill-conceived Shays-Meehan
bill.
|
-
This legislation poses a serious threat to our right to free speech, as
its language is so broad that it could greatly restrict NRA's ability to
communicate with its members regarding the views on the Second Amendment of
candidates seeking elected office.
- We are also extremely concerned with the
expansion of the Federal Election Commission's (FEC) power to conduct random
audits -- even when there is no reason to suspect any violation has occurred.
- Even more outrageous is the authority granted the FEC to refer suspected
violations to the Justice Department at any time without a determination that
the commission has probable cause to believe a violation has occurred.
With
the
abundance of bureaucratic abuse in today's climate, giving these bodies even
more power to abuse is incomprehensible. Call your U.S. Representative at (202)
225-3121 and urge him to oppose H.R. 417, the Shays-Meehan campaign finance
reform bill.
