BRADYS CALL FOR EXTENSION OF WAITING PERIOD
|
On Wednesday, Jim and Sarah Brady and a host of anti-gun Senators announced their support for legislation to extend the now-expired Brady waiting period for three to five days. Led by Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and John Chafee (R-R.I.), additional Senate co-sponsors for the legislation read like a "who's who" in the gun control movement -- Senators Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), Robert Toricelli (D- N.J.), Barbara Boxer (D-Cal.), and Jack Reed (D-R.I.). It appears that the effort on the House side will be spearheaded by U.S. Representatives John Conyers (D-Mich.) and John Porter (R- Ill.).
Readers of this Alert need no education on the fallacy of the waiting period as a "crime control" measure -- especially in light of the superior National Instant Check System, that Congress chose over the Brady five-day wait, currently running nationwide. We will, however, continue to update you on this and any related bills as they begin to move through the legislative process. In the meantime, be sure to call your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives at (202) 224-3121 and encourage them to oppose any schemes to extend the misguided waiting period.
