Hmmm. Whooda thunk it? A CBSNews.com blog is blasting Mike Wallace for being hopelessly anti-gun and appearing at a
Brady Bunch fundraiser in
"attack Charlton Heston" mode. Kind of surprising.
Is there hope for CBS?
I doubt it. I see the implications against Wallace as more far-reaching than an inability to report
on gun control. He
didn't fail at being objective about guns - he failed at being objective,
PERIOD.
And I can't give CBS too many kudos for "allowing a cbsnews.com blog" to
take Wallace to mild task. It's a way of satisfying the internet crowd
(the noisemakers) while not reporting anything about it to Grandma &
Grandpa who never see anything but the 7 o'clock news. CBS should be
reporting the issue in their newscasts, discussing it in their talking-head
shows. Otherwise, this will be quickly forgotten, as it was when Dan did the same thing in 2001.
Something in the CBS water?
If CBS News were anything but a shell of news organization, it
would strive to maintain (or re-establish) it's credibility by
acknowledging the problems these "old school" journalists have in dealing
with the internet as a news source. Now, the internet "ain't poifect" (hey, it
was created by ALGORE! :-) but does provide a path for certain undeniable
truths to shine through for more Americans - like BOTH GUN CONTROL AND
DECEPTIVE MEDIA ARE BAD THINGS.
If CBS (or ABC or NBC or CNN or...) were smart, it would turn all this
embarrasment into an "opportunity" and publicly retool into something that
isn't weighted down by has-been political idealogues of the '60's - and do it loudly.
Give FOX News a run for it's money over the airwaves (don't
need cable or satellite for the big 3). And even FOX News seems to do little else
anymore but over-report disaster and "missing blond" news. But when they
do touch on guns, it's fair and balanced.
Hey, if a conservative talk radio station can startup in the San Francisco Bay Area (KSFO AM 560), and
actually SPROUT competition (KNEW AM 910), anything can happen. Well, except maybe
CBS becoming more fair and balanced.

While a change in NRA's presidential leaderhip always draws great attention, it also brings
new First and Second Vice President elections. NRAWinningTeam.com
is pleased to announce that John Sigler was elected
First Vice-President and Ronald Schmeitz
was the board's choice for Second Vice-President.
Congratulations to both of these strong NRA leaders as well as the entire board, Wayne LaPierre and his
excellent executive team! Our association has
never run smoother or been more successful in shoring up the Second Amenment and
returning America to a nation that once again appreciates and values our firearms heritage.
The weakness of Sarah Brady's partners in Congress is testimony to the skill of
Chris Cox and his ILA team. Perhaps this national momentum will help prod some of the more backward states
like California, Illinois and New Jersey to
be a bit more progressive and realistic in their outlook toward crime,
personal protection and the important role their law-abiding citizenry can play in controlling
those problems. When that process begins, our country will truly be starting to fill in the larger cracks
that have formed in
the concrete of the Second Amendment over the last 4 decades.

NRA leadership changed expectedly in Houston, with the transfer of
the presidential gavel from Kayne B. Robinson to
Sandra S. Froman.
 Kayne Robinson |
As an extremely successful NRA president, Kayne's legacy is his vision - Free Hunters - a program designed to protect
the national health of hunting, to restore and maintain ready access
to hunting areas and remove governmental obstacles that exist to restrict and
even destroy our hunting heritage for future generations. As First Vice-President,
Kayne supported President Charlton Heston during his unprecendented 5 year term by
assuming many of the day-to-day administrative duties of the president, leaving Mr.
Heston free to advance NRA as only he could - in the public eye.
 Sandy Froman |
Sandra Froman may be the second woman president of our association, but she is
as unique an individual as you will find in our movement. It's hard to imagine
as workable a combination of "tough" and "nice" - tough enough to run the oldest and most powerful
civil rights organization in the world and nice enough to prefer "Sandy".
An accomplished attorney
in her own right, Sandy has risen to the top position at NRA in an incredibly
short time. In what will surely set the liberal media seriously off balance, Sandy
is a truly friendly person but speaks from a reassuring directness.
In volunteer meetings, I've seen Sandy often stress the advantage of convincing gun-owning women to speak up
about the importance of their right to self-defense and the ability to exercise that right.
"Sorry guys, one woman is worth five of you when speaking to lawmakers," she states matter-of-factly.
She should know.
Sandy is quick to relate the experience that sparked her involvement
in the Second Amendment movement years ago, before she ever owned a gun. Waking alone to the unmistakable sound of someone
breaking into her home in the middle of the night, Sandy cried out to her neighbors for help through an open window.
She was amazed at the lack of response she received - that is, absolutely none - not even a call to 911. Luckily, the criminal was deterred that
night by her rucus, but the realization of what could have easily happened struck like lightning. Certainly, a fire was set because
as much as any American in history, Sandy declared "Never Again!" Today, her leadership helps men and women keep
themselves and their families safe
all across our great nation.

Ok, I'm accepting reality. The days of Edward R. Morrow are dead. Forget about "Journalism" presenting facts without bias.
Today, one can find "journalists" who will openly justify injecting their opinion into their news reports.
Today, those who defend once-respected news outlets like CBS sound nieve or worse. "Buyer beware" has come home to
journalism with a vengeance and those who do not put a little effort into staying informed... won't.
So I hope these "New Journalism" opinion makers are paying close attention
to the case of Springfield, Illinois Million Mom March president Annette "Flirty" Stevens, who (to quote the Springfield State Journal-Register) "...was
arrested last week when police allegedly found an illegal gun and drugs in
her home..." FULL ARTICLE
The story bears attention because it really should change opinions - those of anti-gun reporters and their willing audience.
But don't believe me - just consider these highlights from the news report...
"...The handgun... had a scratched-off serial number..."
"...Authorities said they obtained a search warrant for the residence as part of an ongoing investigation of a recent series of drive-by shootings..."
"...Stevens has a "close connection" with one of two feuding groups involved in the shootings, Lt. Rickey Davis said Monday. Stevens, 47... admitted she does know some of the people allegedly involved in the drive-by shootings..."
"...[D]etectives working on the drive-by cases... began taking a closer look at Stevens after her name came up in interviews with witnesses and informants..."
"...Since her son's death, Stevens has become involved in the anti-gun-violence movement..."
"...Friday's discoveries could lead to her being charged with defacing the identification marks on a handgun, manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance and having no valid firearm owner's ID card, police said..."
Now fellow gun-owners, please consider the number of rules, regulations and laws that affect us as we simply endeavor to enjoy
our sport. Think of the consequences of simple mistakes - selling the wrong type of gun the wrong way, or making
a mistake on a form when buying a gun. Either subjects us to at least one felony charge, and most likely more.
The poor Americans that get caught in gun control traps can easily face a $5000 attorney fee to clear their name - and that's the GOOD outcome!
Consider that California has banned .22 target pistols of the type used in the Olympics and has prevented many of our brethern from enjoying
some firearms because of cosmetic features. Most recently, the California legislature and prominent Republican Governor
Arnold Shwarzeneggar banned a type of single-shot bolt-action rifle!
Of course, my fellow gun-owners don't need to be reminded of these facts because we are the victims
of the political games that cause law-abiding citizens to lose freedom while
criminals are upheld as role models.
No, it's the "NEW Journalism" opinion makers of today that need to pay attention. Ok - you want to change the world.
Murrow is dead. At least you can try to search for the truth, can't you? It's not that hard, really.
In fact, the truth is screaming in silence in the above news story.

I've always thought that Second
Amendment activists who question the President's
commitment to our Right-To-Keep-And-Bear-Arms because of his statements regarding
"assault weapons" (AWs)... well, they
just didn't listen very closely. It's ironic that seasoned political
animals who normally take everything politicians say with at least 400 lbs.
of salt suddenly go on a salt-free diet when one of our own says something
that doesn't sound "party line" - so quick to take it all at face value and
believe the worst.
To my knowledge, the only thing the President ever said regarding AW's is
"If it gets on my desk, I will sign it." Gun-owners of little faith
immediately saw this as a betrayal, but the only subtext that I've ever
heard in those words was a challenge to Sarah Brady.
To me, "If it gets on my desk..." always translated to "If you can manage
to get an AW ban through a GOP House and a GOP senate, with all I'm going
to do behind the scenes to stop it..." Of course, it is a challenge that
was voiced at a crucial time - when Mr. Bush was under the microscope
of an anti-gun media in his 2000 campaign, being contrasted with Algore's
penchant to continue Clinton's dastardly anti-freedom work. And I don't
think Mr. Bush ever expounded on or explained his challenge, but merely
repeated it verbatim when asked about it.
IMO, we are LUCKY that Mr. Bush's words were MIS-interpreted by the press
to mean he supported the AW ban. After all, that misconception may have
cost Algore the election, having confused voters who would have voted
against a pro-gun candidate. WHAT "L-U-C-K" (that is, if you believe in
L-U-C-K.)
And IMO, we're LUCKY that the press still hadn't figured it out on Sept. 13
last year. Oh, the antis tried to clear up the misconception, with their
charges that the President was quietly working against the AW ban while
still publicly parroting that badly-worded sentence "If it gets on my
desk..." (We all know the President has linguistic problems sometimes :-)
So when I hear a Bush nominee up before the senate state that they support
the President's position on the AW ban, I think I hear a completely
different message than gun activists who have opted for that salt-free
diet. I respond with a "You go, dude..."

Let's not forget to thank...
 Charlton Heston NRA Memorial Statue
(as Will Penny, his favorite role)
|
It's an excellent time to reflect on the past decade insofar as the
Second Amendment is concerned. Memory lane invariably leads to one place.
In 1997, Charlton Heston, Wayne LaPierre and the NRA board went far beyond
the vision and scope one would normally associate with "gun-rights advocacy
groups" when Mr. Heston joined the team officially as a member of the NRA
Board of Directors. The next year he was elected NRA President, but he had already started to
change the face of what freedom, guns and the cultural war meant to America.
Never before had NRA's message reached so deeply into America's
conversation. And not just with politicos or gun owners, but at our
country's water coolers and dinner tables.
For decades, the left had successfully worked to relegate gun ownership to a
fringe activity. At best, those who excercised their Second Amendment rights were
fast becoming viewed as knuckle-dragging neandrethals who used guns to
vicariously live out the wildest fantasies of war movies and cowboy TV
shows.
But when this icon of Hollywood stood tall to deliver his booming voice to
the nation, those who loved and trusted him listened. He had never been
embroiled in scandal and was well-known for adopting political causes which
stood on the highest moral ground. Here he was, telling his millions of
adoring fans that something was happening in America and they needed to do
something about it!
The single most number of hits ever received in one day by this site was in 1999
when Rush Limbaugh read Mr. Heston's "Winning The Cultural War" on the air
(originally given at the Harvard Law School Forum, Tuesday, 16 February 1999). Rush
intentionally didn't reveal the online source of the piece - he wanted
people to find it themselves. And search they did. Most websites had not
posted that speech on that morning (my own included), but hundreds had it
posted by evening. And the number of people who visited sites like mine
looking for it was strong evidence that something had happened in America and
Charlton Heston had given it a name!
Many remember Mr. Heston's courageous reading of Ice T's "Cop Killer" lyrics
to a Warner Bros. Board of Director's meeting. In contrast, this tome will ring true
throughout history because it encapsulates the very essence of the dangers
that will always place American freedoms and principles at risk.
Read it here.
Charlton Heston's unprecedented 3 terms as NRA President will reverberate in the
halls of the NRA building at Fairfax, Virginia and throughout the membership
for a long time. Mr. Heston has entered his Golden Years with grace,
dignity and a legacy that spans the breadth of American existence. The
concept of "From my cold, dead hands" has been carved into the country's
heart for over 200 years, but it was his inspiration to give it a powerful
voice at a critical time.
God bless Charlton Heston.

Some are "getting it"...
Maybe Democrats should visit more gun shows
Indianapolis Star, 11/11/04
"...It is considered by many to be a wholesome experience. I saw dozens of families walking around, with some dads looking to buy their son or daughter a first .22 rifle or shotgun..."
"...If the Democrats are to avoid being relegated to the perpetual role of minority opposition, they will need to develop and articulate an alternative, coherent set of cultural values that resonates with, rather than alienates, a larger number of Americans living between the two coasts..."
"...In the Indiana House elections, the NRA endorsed candidates in 77 of the 100 districts: 46 were Republicans, but 31 were Democrats. On the other hand, the national Democratic Party, which demonizes gun shows and ridicules gun owners, has little credibility with the millions of gun owners who have been willing to vote for local Democrats in the red states..."

President Bush won his mandate because he is able to connect with the
people to communicate his leadership.
Democrat leaders seem to have completely forgotten how to be "real". To them, the American
electorate is just a pool of spin-susceptible dummies. If they can just
phrase it the right way, or put the right imagery in front of us, we will
explode into "OUTRAGE!" and look for a Republican to tar and feather (like a
Skinner-trained dog salivating on command).
The architects of Democrat party philosophy seem unable to comprehend that the sixties are long dead, and America has left the decade
in the dust. Until the Democrats decide to actually progress to the 21st
century and have some respect for the voters, they will lose. And they will
lose until they self-destruct (which may have just started).
Imagine an America where, ONCE AGAIN, both major parties would not advance gun control for political reasons or
pit one group of Americans against another. Imagine an America where BOTH parties maintained focus on the goodwill of the nation.
To fufill it's promise of freedom, America needs such cooperation, and one out of two isn't enough.

NRA HAS ENDORSED PRESIDENT BUSH!
According to AP, Wayne said "...The Supreme Court is going to be crucial to the future of the Second Amendment,
and President Bush will appoint justices that respect the Bill of Rights..." (That's
Wayne LaPierre, NRA's Executive Vice-President, for the non-gun-owners reading this.) As always, Wayne reminds us of the
importance of this election to our Second Amendment rights.
The official endorsement means that NRA-PVF can now help the President's reelection effort with millions of dollars and
volunteer "Get Out the Vote" efforts.
AP quotes $20 million to be focused on 10 to 15 targeted states. That sounds high to this NRA Benefactor member.
I suggest members look to the association for such details. At press time, your webmaster could not yet find
information regarding the endosement at NRA sites:
nra.org,
nrapvf.org,
nraila.org or

The California NRA Members' Councils are reporting that yesterday evening, Governor Shwarzenegger
vetoed two bad gun control bills. See their excellent
information page.
But it was only one week ago to the day that Shwarzenegger poked an extrememly sharp stick into the eyes of CA gun-owners
(not to mention the Bill of Rights) when he signed an extremist ban on single-shot and bolt-action .50-caliber rifles into law!
Again, the day is significant - it was the very same on which Sen. Feinstein's so-called "Assault Weapons Ban"
(a.k.a. the Clinton Gun Ban) expired federally, removing one of the stupidest set of restrictions ever dreamed up
regarding firearms - based on cosmetic features! The Governator could have chosen any one of thiry days
(the signing period after a bill arrives on his desk)
to perform those actions - but he chose September 13 and September 20.
Now, were I a California politician trying to straddle both sides of some political fence, I believe that's
exactly what I would have done - and even in that order!
But were I concerned with passing sensible legislation, rejecting the political whims of special interest groups, and
(dare I say it in California?) defending the Bill of Rights,
I would have vetoed all three in a heartbeat.
Because of timing alone, actions convey strong messages to those who are listening.

"My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam. I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle."
|
-- Sen. John Kerry, Outdoor Life Magazine, Oct., 2004 issue, p82
|
It would seem that Senator Kerry has completely flip-flopped
regarding his position on assault weapons since being interviewed for the October issue
of Outdoor Life. Back then,
the senator clearly felt that simply reminiscing about those good old war days was justification enough to own an assault weapon.
Surely, one who would recall his favorite gun memories with such warmth
would not forego others the same enjoyment.
But this week, in response to the sunset of the Clinton Gun Ban, Sen. Kerry stated "America's streets will not be as safe" and
"Every law enforcement officer in America doesn't want us selling assault weapons in the streets of America."
Senator Kerry, NRAWinningTeam.com would also like to know the answers to the questions posed in the US Newswire article linked below:
Where do you keep that rifle? Is it legally registered? How did it get into the United States?
It's been 37 days since Senator Kerry took questions from the press.

| 09/15/2004 - That CBS can fail completely as a credible news reporting organization comes as no surprise to NRA members.
Gun-owners have been in the sights of the liberal media for a long time. This report from 1999
about CBS' gross misreporting reveals bias that Dan Rather insists is not there. Remember, Dan told us there is no
investigation underway at CBS about the suspect Killian documents and "neither should there
be".
Yes, that's the same Dan Rather that committed this "error in judgement"

09/14/2004 - A picture is worth a thousand sound-bites...

|
09/13/2004 - Today is an important day for the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.
The sunset of the 1993 Clinton Gun Ban
represents one of only two significant rollbacks of federal gun control in decades.
The death of this ridiculous law that targeted inanimate objects and law-abiding citizens
would seem to mark somewhat of a milestone. When Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992, it
marked the beginning of one of history's darkest and most hostile periods for the Second Amendment.
This anti-gun politician, working closely with the nation's worst firearms prohibitionists,
would attempt to destroy America's firearms heritage from every direction. Anti-gun bills that NRA had fought
successfully for 10 years suddenly were poised for easy passage. The Brady Bill was first, followed by
Dianne Feinstein's cleverly named "Assault Weapons Ban". Weakened federally with an anti-gun
administration and Congress, the best NRA could manage was to have sunset provisions
included in both bills.
It is perhaps fitting that today, with Bill Clinton's administration just a memory, it is those
sunset provisions that promise to restore life to a proud but tarnished shooting heritage. While those
sunset provisions seemed like a pitifully tiny win in 1993, today their obvious importance exemplifies the
"never say die" attitude of our wonderful association. Once again, the NRA family proves itself
a "Winning Team!"
HOWEVER - the sunset has reopened the gun control debate
in America. Unlike previous decades, much of America has been re-educated in the Second Amendment. Recent years
have even seen liberal scholars of the Constitution, so-called "progressives" that curl up
warm and safe in their towers of elitism insulated from the common man, publicly admit that the Second Amendment does indeed
state an individual right. But all politics are local, and it is vitally important that the opponents
of freedom not be allowed to again frame these simple rifles and our sport in such negative terms.
Sub note - Today brings victory for gun-owners nationally, but a loss in California.
Our governor Arnold Shwarzenegger today
signed a .50 caliber ban into state law.
Rumours suggest his decision was related to the sunset of the Clinton Gun Ban, as if the types of firearms were even remotely connected.
To my knowledge, California has just become the first state to ban a type of bolt-action/single-shot rifle. Now THAT'S extremism!
