California NRA members have organized in a big way!
They've formed approximately 50 "Members' Councils"
throughout the state. Under ILA charter, they lobby both
in their own local areas and together to fight anti-gun
legislation statewide.

This information comes from Bruce Johnson, an officer
in the NRA Members' Council of Contra Costa County.
Thanks, Bruce!

I just returned from the NRA Annual Meetings in Philadephia, Pennsylvania, and I'm happy to report not only that many nice things were said about California Members' Councils, but also that our own Mike Haas was elected as a non-board member of the Nominating Committee. Mike was nominated by Dr. David Oliver, who cited many of Mike's outstanding accomplishments, including creation of this email list, and called him "the ultimate grassroots activist." Congratulations, Mike! I can't think of anyone I'd rather have representing me in this important function.

Other significant events in Philly include:

Tanya Metaksa received the prestigious Sybil Ludington Women's Freedom Award for achievments too numerous to list here. This honor is named for Revolutionary War Heroine, Sybil Ludington, and is shared by Marion Hammer and Alice Bull.

Ron Babcock, President of the Vallejo Members' Council, received the "Recruiter of the Year" award for his ongoing excellence in recruiting.

Upon passing the gavel to Charlton Heston, outgoing President Marion Hammer was immediately elected to the Executive Committee - a lifelong honorary position with a voice but no vote on the Board. Marion will serve her remaining 3 years as a Board member with full voting rights and will then assume a lifelong position in this important advisory capacity. God bless you, Marion, for your years of heroic service to our cause.

The following officers were elected or appointed to serve us:

   Charlton Heston - President;
   Kayne B. Robinson - 1st Vice President;
   Sandra S. Froman - 2nd Vice President;
   Wayne R. LaPierre, Jr. - Exec. Vice President;
   Edward J. Land, Jr. - Secretary;
   Wilson H. Phillips, Jr. - Treasurer;
   Tanya K. Metaksa - Exec. Dir. of NRA-ILA;
   Craig D. Sandler - Exec. Dir. of General Operations.

Next year's Annual Meetings will be held on April 30 - May 4, 1999, in Denver, Colorado. I encourage all California activists to attend.

-Bruce Johnson
