AT&T Feels the Heat --
Tries to Backtrack
|
"...[T]his decision came as a
direct result of contact from AT&T..." |
Last week’s lead story on AT&T requesting that an NRA infomercial
be pulled from its cable system in St. Louis generated an
overwhelming response from NRA members and gun owners.
Many of
you who contacted AT&T probably received the company’s stock
response that noted in part, "Contrary to inaccurate assertions
publicized by interest groups, AT&T Broadband didn’t make any
decision to limit or remove NRA advertising from our systems."
But AT&T’s Clinton-esque parsing of words cannot conceal the
action they took to silence NRA. GRTV, the agency that sold AT&T
cable its package of ads, which included the NRA infomercial, did
in fact pull the NRA ad, but GRTV noted this decision came as a
direct result of contact from AT&T.
AT&T’s complaint to GRTV was
based primarily on calls from a single viewer -- a protest which,
despite AT&T’s claims to the contrary -- was still celebrated on
the "Million Mom March" website as recently as yesterday.
