U.S. Senators Larry Craig (R-Id.) (also an NRA Board Member) and Michael Crapo (R-Id.) have introduced S. 2609, the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Programs Improvement Act of 2000. The Senators used the House-passed H.R. 3671 (see FAX Alerts Vol. 7 and Vol. 15) as the model for their bill, but made some changes, including increasing funds earmarked for shooting ranges and hunter safety training. H.R. 3671 serves as an excellent model as it passed in the House virtually without objection -- the vote was 432 to 2. As with the House bill, the Senate version's core purpose is to put an end to mismanagement of the sportsmen's trust funds by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Please contact your U.S. Senators and ask that they co-sponsor S. 2609 and urge expedited action on the bill. It is critical that this legislation be passed this year and there are few remaining legislative weeks in which to do it.
