Self-appointed "gun safety" czar, Housing & Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Andrew Cuomo, who, in recent weeks has served as the Clinton-Gore point man for a host of anti-gun activities, is a more than a little red in the face this week. A May 2, Washington Times article notes how one of the Secretary's armed bodyguards left his loaded pistol in the HUD cafeteria. HUD spokesman David Egner was quick to note, "There were no other incidents of any gun being left anywhere else." But Egner's assurances, however, are contradicted by reports from several of the bodyguard's fellow HUD co-workers, who have acknowledged that the Cuomo bodyguard had a history of leaving his gun "lying around." In addition to being an active crusader for reckless lawsuits against the gun industry and crusading for granting federal buying preferences to Smith & Wesson, Cuomo also recently launched a multi-million dollar boondoggle to use our federal tax dollars to fund "gun buy backs." While these gun turn-ins have no impact on crime -- based on studies by anti-gun criminologists and public health researchers -- as criminals are not lining up to turn in the tools of their trade, the Secretary's endeavor has received plaudits from HCI. An April 28, Associated Press story quotes HCI spokeswoman Naomi Paiss proclaiming, "Anything that gets guns out of the homes, and thereby, saves lives, is a good thing."
