HOUSE GIVES OVERWHELMING SUPPORT TO H.R. 4051 |
|
On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed U.S.
Representative Bill McCollum's (R-Fla.) H.R. 4051, the "Project
Exile: The Safe Streets and Neighborhoods Act of 2000" (see FAX Alert
Vol. 7, No. 12), on a 358 to 60 vote.
Those voting against this bill
-- a bill that promotes enforcement of existing laws that prohibit
violent felons from possessing firearms and encourages mandatory
minimum sentences for using a firearm in the commission of a violent
crime -- were some of the House's most vocal supporters of Bill
Clinton's anti-gun agenda, including Reps.
- John Conyers (D-Mich.),
- Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.),
- Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.),
- Zoe Lofgren
(D-Calif.), and
- Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.).
Clinton,
who now claims to
support the "Project Exile" prosecution model after
his
Administration's first seven years produced an abysmal record on
enforcing federal laws, was AWOL during the debate and vote. H.R. 4051
now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
