Not only are there questions regarding Clinton's claim that he now supports enforcing existing laws (see last week's FAX Alert), but now U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) has asked why none of the $280 million the President proposed has been earmarked for improving NICS. "Too often those people who have no business purchasing guns are allowed to do so. Why? Because state and local jurisdictions do not report disqualifying information to the NICS in a timely manner," Dingell said. "This inept reporting must not be allowed to continue -- it could, literally, mean the difference between life and death." He also commented that poor reporting of information to NICS may also lead to needless delays and unjustified denials of firearm sales to law-abiding citizens. Dingell urged Clinton to "ask the Justice Department for a thorough review of the deficiencies of the NICS and to work with Congress, the states and local law enforcement agencies to improve its effectiveness as soon as possible." When you contact your federal lawmakers, ask them to also support Rep. Dingell's effort to improve NICS.
